Resources
Teaching While White - www.teachingwhilewhite.org
This website has it all (including a catchy title which I borrowed) - a podcast, a blog featuring student and teacher voices, and a list of both online and text resources. They also feature information about workshops and resources specific to teaching Indigenous students. Although the website is based in America, they have a lot of great information that can be easily translated to a Canadian context. (2017). Teaching while white. www.teachingwhilewhite.org. |
Antiracist Teaching by Robert P. Amico
(2016) Amico uses a combination of research and anecdotes in order to aid educators in ¨awakening the self¨. This is a short and accessible guide to gaining racial competency and bringing it into the classroom. The book provides frameworks of theory, voices of teachers and students, and practical strategies that can be implemented by the reader. Amico, R.P. (2016). Antracist teaching. Routledge. |
Engaging Equity: New Perspectives on Anti-Racist Education edited by Leeno Karumanchery
(2005) This anthology attempts to reveal the systemic inequality present in the Western educational institution. Each chapter takes a different approach, but the goal is the same for all: provide educators with the tools they need to tackle racial bias in school. Karumanchery, L. (Ed.). (2005). The Guide for White Women Who Teach Black Boys
by Eddie Moore Jr., Ali Michael, and Marguerite W. Penick-Parks (2018) While the other resources listed take a more general approach, this anthology tackles a more specific race relation within the schooling system - white women teachers and black boy students. The book is full of student learning activities, activities for educator reflection, strategies to adopting ant-racist teaching practices, as well as personal stories from educators and students.
